Every day is different, but the sunsets - in the absence of dark clouds - are usually sublime. And even when there isn’t a fiery ball of crimson sinking slowly into San Juan Bay, the dance of light and shadow can be enthralling.

Sunset on the Paseo in Old San Juan is among one of the island’s special pleasures. The Paseo includes the expansive Plaza Princesa, which is punctuated with towering palms, and appointed with an ornate fountain. It extends to the massive sandstone walls dating back to 1630’s, which surround Old San Juan, and mark the beginning of the Paseo Del Morro trail. a National Historic Site.

The promenade between the flowing fountain and the historic trail is lined with benches. Sit there when the day begins to ebb and watch the evening’s improvisation in the sky. Or seek higher ground, and wait and watch the drama from a roof top in the Old City.
